Face Up To Facts

Skincare is not just for women. The onslaught of mass media has brought the myth of eternal youthfulness into every home and it is slowly seeping into public consciousness making the concept of looking good generally synonymous with that of looking young. Yes, it is a nightmare. And, yes, this nightmare does now also apply to men.

The good news is that it is actually pretty easy to incorporate a basic skincare regime into everyday life as a preventative and curative measure toward keeping yourself nice.

Identify your skin type and choose the best products for it:

Normal Skin: if you are blessed with even textured, problem free skin then rejoice in the ‘normal skin’ category.

Oily skin: those of us with oily skin tend to experience greasy patches especially across the forehead, nose and chin – the ‘t-zone’. Oily skin tends to be prone to pimples and blackheads and needs a little extra care. Try Aqueous crème, available from any good chemists or pharmacy, it will calm skin irritated by other chemically laced products.

Dry skin: characterised by uncomfortable tightness after washing and shaving, dry skin can be patchy and sometimes a little scaly. The challenge is to keep well moisturised as dry skin is less light reflective and can be dull in appearance

Sensitive skin: sensitive skin makes itself known through reaction to harsh skincare or shave products and possibly even foods or fragrance. There are many products designed for sensitive skin but it may take a little experimentation to find the one for you

Combination skin: any combination of the above skin types, most commonly manifested in an oily t-zone area and dry on the cheeks.

Remember, your skin type may change throughout your life, or perhaps even seasonally. On the bright side, with a little care and attention there is no need not to flaunt clear even skin no matter what your underlying type.

Skin care advice from Jean Asher, facialist

The skin is the body’s largest organ, by far and as such it needs to be treated with the respect it deserves. The best treat for the skin, face or body, is cold pressed sweet almond oil, available from nealsyardremedies.com under base oils. This nourishing oil will tenderly care for your skin throughout the year.

Problem skin can flare up at any age and is especially sensitive to stress.
